Should government set nutrition standards for schools?
The Associated Press reports that 9 out of 10 schools sell junk food, with candy, soda, pizza and other snacks competing with nutritious meals. Already plentiful in high schools, junk food has become more available in middle schools over the past five years, according to the Government Accounting Office (GAO), the investigative arm of the U.S. Congress. "Parents should know that our schools are now one of the largest sources of unhealthy food for their kids," said Senator Tom Harkin, who asked for the study.

Lift Ticket Prices: Vail and Beaver Creek top the list at $81
Some resorts actually boast that they have the highest lift ticket price in the country. This season it's Vail and Beaver Creek, which each charge $81 a day.

Royden Rose
Royden is one of the new roses I chose for the Birthday Garden - my sneaky birthday present to daughter, where I spent lots of money on heaps of roses, pretended it was a real birthday present, and felt completely justified - generous, even!

Greenhouse

The greenhouse is still standing after the weekend storms, though it took a bit of a beating. One of the seams tore through so there is now an extra flap on the tent-like covering. I think I can mend it with some clear duct tape.

The plants inside are doing fine, in spite of the ruckus. In fact, yesterday, I transplanted the pepper seedlings from the seed starter tray into small pots. I also washed out a few seed trays from last year and planted creeping thyme and basil seeds in them. The onion seedlings can use transplanting, too, though I'll have to find some pots for them.

To-do list

It has been quite difficult to find time to work on the things on month's to do list for the garden, made with a little help from the Organic Gardening newsletter, but I think I can check a few more things off the list in the next two weeks.

order strawberry plants

onion, leek
pumpkin and cucumber
tomato, eggplant, pepper
basil and parsley
marigold, zinnia, and creeping thyme

These pepper seedlings are doing very well in the greenhouse. I am regretting that I didn't start tomato plants earlier; I have ordered the seeds but I think they will be a little while longer before they get here. Ah, well.

Strawberries

I placed an order for a few things from Johnny's Seeds including some trays, markers, and pots for the greenhouse. I considered buying some asparagus to plant in the permanent bed but, after the troubles I had with asparagus last year and the fact that it would not be edible for a few years, I decided some strawberry plants would be more fun after all.

We have been to Costco and found some new arborvitae to replace the ones that died (in the background) over the winter. The three new ones cost as much as one of the old ones which we bought at Gethsemane Garden Center.

What Is Hydroponics Gardening and How to Do It Indoors
You may have heard of hydroponics gardening before and got either interested or turned off by its gibberish sounding moniker. What exactly is hydroponics may ask. Hydroponics was derived from the Greek word hydro, which means “water” and ponos, which means “labor or water-working”. Hydroponics gardening involves growing plants with their roots in other nutrient solutions [...]
