Recycling Last year, my experiments with reusing old water bottles

Recycling

water bottle drainage

Last year, my experiments with reusing old water bottles as mini cloches and water wells did not succeed very well. The cloches filled with water (with or without caps on) drowning their charges, and the water wells spilled their resevoirs immediately, parching theirs.

Now that I have the greenhouse, the water bottles are turning into very nice cheap pots for seedlings. I drill a few holes in the bottom with the mini-rotary tool then I use a utility knife to cut off the tops. These are working quite well!

Your Garden & Plants :: RE: Deciduous Pittosporum. Can I take it to Portland, Oregon?

Monica, I've never met a Pittosporum which has dropped its leaves. Those that I grow are all very robustly evergreen. I haven't checked the botanical books, though!

I can't talk about hardy, but I can certainly praise Pittosporums for tolerating neglect and not much water!
cheers

I transplanted the ginger from the shade garden--where it had been pummeled by the gutter and trampled the neighbor--over to the icon garden last fall. It seems very happy.

"Nobody Wants Fast Food for Thanksgiving!" "Stop for a moment

"Nobody Wants Fast Food for Thanksgiving!"
"Stop for a moment and think about how important real food is to our holidays and celebrations. Suppose you showed up at Grandma s house on Thanksgiving, and dinner was Big Macs, McFries, and Mcapple pies, with maybe some micro-waved convenience store bean burritos on the side. You would think that she had lost her mind!"

Meet Bob Waldrop, founder of the Oklahoma Food Cooperative, writer, and ardent supporter of Oklahoma s farmers and ranchers.  Bob doesn't mince words and what he has to say will make you think about your grocery shopping list...

"Nobody wants fast food on Thanksgiving. Everybody wants 'slow food' for celebrations. Turkeys stuffed with sage dressing, seasoned with herbs, carrots, onions, and celery, baked sweet potatoes, real mashed potatoes, gravy made from the broth from the turkey, and home-made pies and rolls. That is a Thanksgiving dinner. It s not cheap fast food sandwiches made with mystery meats and industrial chemicals.

"The Slow Food movement is at the vanguard of the next big thing in food. It rejects the tasteless, anonymous, homogenized, and industrialized flavors dished up by the modern agribidness system. It embraces real food meals prepared from basic ingredients that originate in local farms with stories and histories and are distributed via local 'Value Chains' where every stakeholder benefits and receives a fair price for their contribution to the final result. Winter rye

Maybe I should have tilled the winter rye under when it was a little less, er, vigorous?

Back to the Land, Away from Menopauseville
In 1990, Arleigh and Heather Fair sold their family home and bought a waterfront penthouse in Vancouver, BC. For four years they walked, biked, drank lattes and thought they were in the center of the universe. It wasn t. They both had the urge to play in the dirt but neither was ready to admit it to the other. Restless, Arleigh went out and bought 80 acres of land that was logged in the 1970s Listen and be inspired by Heather's story.  Here's how: Subscribe to our podcast feed (so you can listen to the attachment below) or simply download/listen here to the mp3 file.

End of October Roses everywhere are starting flowering. Flowering shrubs

End of October
Roses everywhere are starting flowering. Flowering shrubs are, too - and the Rhododendrons by the water race - outbursts of colour and foliage fill every border. The garden is positively blooming, radiant with good health!

Banksia Lutea
My Banksia Lutea rose - a yellow Banksia - started life as a small cutting. It was nipped (oops) from a bush I saw on a country garden tour.

October Week 3
An assortment of plants are suddenly in flower! Perhaps it's time to step back from the hard garden work and take time to notice and enjoy these little bursts of colour - before the big bossy roses take over.

October Weekend 1
Ha! The Clematis is flowering, as are the big Japanese Flowering Cherry trees in the Pond Paddock. It's time for reading and picnics underneath the blossom - never mind the garden maintenance, or the new garden needing to be dug and planted! Eek!
